Vasily Lanovoy: Yurochka Yakovlev, Ulyanov Misha never took part in these things

Vasily Lanovoy could have celebrated his 88th birthday if he had not entered the world a year ago. I had the opportunity to record a long interview with the legendary actor for the Family Album project (Russian channel, link below).

That’s journalistic luck. He told me that he firmly rejected both his dacha neighbor Vladimir Pozner and the wonderful Yulia Menshova, not to mention the others. In many printed conversations, Vasily Semenovich drew the attention of his interlocutors to the fact that television communication is not inviting. As in this interview that Lanovoy gave to a specialized magazine:

– It’s already simply impossible to trace my whole life, since a lot has been forgotten, but I don’t even want to remember anything. After the 10th grade I acted in the film “Matriculation”. That was my first picture, in 1953. Counting ever since. From 1954 to today I work as an actor.

In addition, since 1957 I have been officially working at the Vakhtangov Theater. It is already 61 years old. And I must say that quite a diverse life was lived both in the cinema and in the theater.

Cinematography used to be very different. And the theater too. And the combination of these arts makes my life, although the theater has always been the main thing for me.

Vakhtangov Theater is not a production factory, that’s for sure. For many years it was a kind of “family theater” because there was a large family with great actors. Gritsenko, Plotnikov, Astangov, Lukyanov, Borisova, Mansurova, Alekseeva… Do you understand what the names were? Unbelievable!

– By the way, what is the difference between this galaxy of artists and the current one?

– The actor must remain a mystery to the viewer. Necessary. And the older generations strictly adhered to this rule. Because when all the everyday details about you are known, no matter how vulgar, then it’s impossible to get any pictures and no talent. Our theatrical elders always thought so. And my teachers … Mansurova – my teacher, and Gritsenko, and Plotnikov, and Astangov – they always said: “You must be a mystery to the viewer.” That’s right. And today’s “television hints” about the fate of the actors don’t help either.

In this sense, I had quite a rich experience, because from the age of twelve I played in the ZIL folk theater. Sergei Lvovich Stein, my first theater teacher, director of the Lenin Komsomol Theater, finely trained future actors. There were no “rattling noises”. When the movie “Certificate of Achievement” came out, he told me:

“Vasia, just try not to get proud. Self-admiration kills actors.

– The riddle is up to you, of course. They do not flicker on TV channels …

They do it, but I refuse. Based on what I sometimes see on TV I would never agree to go there.

Now it’s my wedding anniversary and they just tortured me. They invite me to various programs, but I don’t always go. That’s the whole short time.

85 years old is a respectable age … There Yurochka Yakovlev left at 85, and what an actor he was! I’ve always taken self-discipline seriously. Ulyanov Misha, Yulechka Borisova … They never took part in these things. It is very important to preserve yourself and remember theatrical taste.

– In the theatre. Vakhtangov, one of the most enduring performances is “Dedication to Eve”. It seems to me that your role shocks the audience with the depth of feelings of love …

– “Dedication to Eve” was based on the wonderful play “Mysterious Variations” by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, there’s something to play for, it’s worthy material. For twenty years we are Zhenya Knyazev We try to unravel the unprecedented mystery of love – the love of two men for one woman and an unexpected break in life when everything falls apart.

– And why did the piece “Pier” disappear from the repertoire?

– I really love and loved this performance. Because Yura Yakovlev went on stage with me, Galochka Konovalova, Slavochka Shalevich came out. My generation played it for the theater’s 90th anniversary. But they left, and now Yulechka Borisova is sick, and we are waiting for her return. So let’s hope she plays again. And more than that, I would very much wish that we also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the theatre, which will take place in 2021, on the pier, if of course we experience it.

– In your opinion, how has the theater changed a lot compared to where you spent your youth?

– Of course changed. It has become different…More fashionable, less classic. Life has changed. They look at what is being done on TV. For me, these are still incomparable values ​​of this theater and those past TV appearances. I’m not talking about cinematography. What were actors!

There’s a lot of talk about patriotism these days. But after all, even then there was patriotism, love for the motherland triumphed. It’s not for free Alexander Sergeyevich he said one of his best phrases: “It is not only possible but also necessary to be proud of the glory of one’s ancestors. Not respecting him is shameful cowardice.” It has always been in Russia. So there is nothing to say here.
